Ocean Surface Topography

چکیده
Definition The deviation of the height of the ocean surface from the geoid is known as the ocean surface topography. The geoid is a surface on which the Earth’s gravity field is uniform. The ocean surface topography is caused by ocean waves, tides, currents, and the loading of atmospheric pressure. The main application of ocean surface topography is for the determination of large-scale ocean circulation.

Impact of Surface Waves on SWOT's Projected Ocean Accuracy
The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission being considered by NASA has, as one of its main objectives, to measure ocean topography with centimeter scale accuracy over kilometer scale spatial resolution. This paper investigates the impact of ocean waves on SWOT’s projected performance. Several effects will be examined: volumetric decorrelation, aliasing of ocean waves, backscattering...
متن کاملInversion of Earth’s changing shape to weigh sea level in static equilibrium with surface mass redistribution
[1] We develop a spectral inversion method for mass redistribution on the Earth’s surface given geodetic measurements of the solid Earth’s geometrical shape, using the elastic load Love numbers. First, spectral coefficients are geodetically estimated to some degree. Spatial inversion then finds the continental surface mass distribution that would force geographic variations in relative sea leve...

The surface of the ocean bulges outward and inward reflecting the topography of the ocean floor. A dense mapping of ocean surface topography from declassified Geosat altimeter data (US Navy), ERS-1 altimeter data (European Space Agency), and repeat-track coverage from the Topex/Poseidon altimeter (NASA and CNES) has provided the first view of the ocean floor structures in many remote areas of t...

متن کاملOn the relationship between fronts of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and surface chlorophyll concentrations in the Southern Ocean
[1] We reexamine the relationship between circulation, bathymetry, and surface chlorophyll in the Southern Ocean, using new high-resolution maps of the frontal structure of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) derived from satellite altimetry. The maps reveal that the ACC consists of multiple filaments or jets. By averaging surface chlorophyll measurements along streamlines, we show that the...
